Castel Caldes

The architecture of Castel Caldes is a melting pot of the Venetian, German and Lombardic cultures

Castel Caldes is located in the village of Caldes only few kilometres from Malé, at the entrance of the Val di Sole. Some architectural elements of this impressive castle recall the monuments at the border of the Bishopric of Trento.

The present appearance of the castle is the result of several architectural modifications, launched by Rambaldo and Arnoldo Cagnò between the 13th and the 16th century. Its five-floor tower served as a residence, as well as a guard tower to control the commercial activities of the Val di Sole. In 1464 the monument came into the possession of the family Thun, who enlarged it. Thanks to the restoration works carried out by its current owner, that is the Autonomous Province of Trento, it is now accessible to the public.

Inside the monument you can admire vaulted ceilings and various rooms with frescoes and wooden decorations. The little chapel devoted to the Blessed Virgin Mary was decorated with frescoes by Elia Naurizio and is definitely worth a visit.

Important: the castle is right in front of the railway station of Caldes (route Trento - Malé).
