Castel Pietra

Pietra Castle is located beneath the hill of Beseno Castle, on the remains of a huge block that broke off the Cengio Rosso

The medieval castle complex of Pietra is located at the edge of the village of Calliano in the Vallagarina valley. Although its architecture is characterised by a mix of different styles which is the result of the numerous architectonic interventions it went through, such as reconstructions, restorations and expansions, the Gothic style is still predominant. Inside the castle you can admire some precious medieval treasures, such as the "Sala del Giudizio", the courtroom with its impressive fresco cycle from the 15th century (realised between 1468 and 1478), which shows scenes from life at court.

Castel Pietra was built as an outpost for Beseno Castle, which rises above it. It owes its name to the large cliff edge it stands on, which formed after a huge landslide that hit this area: the Italian word "pietra" means "stone". Built in a strategic position, the castle was situated at the border between the county of Tyrol and the Venetian Republic until the 16th century. Some battles that took place in this area went down in history, such as the Battle of Calliano on the 10th of August 1487 or the meeting of Austrian and French troops under Napoleon at the end of the 18th century.

Castel Pietra is owned by the same family since 1738. It is accessible for visits and hosts various events.
