This recently discovered and restored castle can be reached in a 45-minute walk by following an easy path starting near the Rio Castello stream, along the road to Bresimo.
The castello di Altaguardia owes its name to its strategic position on the hill of Mt. "Monte Pin" from where the entire valley was controlled in former times. This medieval monument was built on the ruins of a prehistoric fortress, later converted into a roman guard tower. Initially, it belonged to the Livo family but soon it was passed on to the Thun who used it more as a status symbol than as a residence. After having gone through numerous fires and peasant revolts, the castle was abandoned in the 18th century and decayed.
Even if only the ruins of the castle have survived to this day, the romantic and magic atmosphere it conveys still remains unequalled.
The ruins of the castle are accessible.
