The recently discovered castle was restored and can be reached in a 45-minutes walk by following an easy path starting near the Rio Castello stream, along the road to Bresimo.
The castello di Altaguardia owes its name to its strategic position on the hillside of Mt. "Monte Pin", allowing an excellent control over the valley floor. This medieval monument was built on the ruins of a prehistoric fortress, which was then converted into a roman guard tower. Initially, it belonged to the family Livo but soon it was passed on to the Thun, who used it more as a status symbol than a residence. After having gone through numerous fires and peasant revolts, the castle was abandoned in the 18th century and decayed.
Even if only few ruins of the monument survived to this day, they still immerse the ridge it is set on in a magic and romantic atmosphere.
