Castello di Rovereto - MITAG Museo Storico Italiano della Guerra

Since 1921 the Castello di Rovereto hosts the MITAG Museo Storico Italiano della Guerra

The MITAG Museo Storico Italiano della Guerra is a historical museum on World War I and is located inside the Castello di Rovereto. Its rich collection of objects and various documents tell about the everyday life of soldiers during the conflict, as well as the cultural and social aspects of this dramatic period. The rich collection of pictures, objects and materials set up in the display cabinets concerns trench warfare, whereas posters, leaflets and records reveal the experiences of soldiers and civils. Among them you will find some letters that soldiers wrote to their families and viceversa. In those years journaling became very popular as it helped refugees, civils and warriors to cope with the dramatic moments of the war. Some of these journals were given to the museum and can be read meanwhile others are still in possession of the respective families.

The museum is organised in different sections and each one of them is devoted to different topics. The rooms focus on the characteristics of World War I and on the new combat methods invented between the 19th and 20th century. Furthermore, they also deal with technological innovations and the consequences of this global conflict. The Artillery of the Great War in Piazza Podestà at the feet of the castle is open in summer and displays numerous pieces of Italian, British, German and Austro-Hungarian artillery as well as many texts and images. In the Marino and Malipiero towers you can discover weapons of pre- and protohistoric times and the modern age.

Furthermore, the MITAG also proposes temporary exhibitions in remembrance of the Great War and modern conflicts, as well as educational activities for schools and families. It also promotes research studies and publishes historiographical and documentary works.
