MART

The MART in Rovereto is one of the most important museums of modern and contemporary art in Italy

The MART is an important museal centre in the Trentino with two different branches: The head office is located in Corso Bettini 43 in Rovereto, and there is also the Depero Futurist Art House - Casa d'Arte Futurista Depero in Via dei Portici 38, and the Civic Gallery in Trento, located in Via Belenzani 44.

Until 2002, the MART was located in the Palazzo delle Albere in Trento. Already in 1991, the idea was born to enlarge the museum in order to integrate also the works of the famous Futurist artist Fortunato Depero (1892-1960) and the exhibits of the Trento Art Museum into the exhibition. On December 15, 2002, the new headquarters of the MART in Rovereto was inaugurated, a large building complex constructed according to the plans of Mario Botta and Giulio Andreolli. The Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art is now in possession of an invaluable artistic legacy made up of the greatest Italian works of art of the 20th century. Dozens of exhibitions and projects are organised every year.

The permanent exhibition of the MART contains more than 15,000 paintings, drawings and sculptures, including many important works of the Italian avant-garde of the 20th century. The artists represented include Giorgio de Chirico, Carlo Carrà, Mario Sironi and Fortunato Depero. In addition, there are numerous private collections to admire at the MART, such as the Talamoni Collection and the collection of the VAF Foundation. The museum, 29,000 m² in size, offers a ticket office, a bookshop and a conference room on the ground floor. On the 1st floor, two rooms are dedicated to special exhibitions, while on the 2nd floor a glass passage leads to the 3,800 m² exhibition area. A technical library and an archive are also part of the MART: both have been opened to the public.
