An apple a day keeps the doctor away…
The Trentino is one of the most important growing areas of high-quality apples throughout Europe, even if the cultivation area is not that large. The cultivation, quality check and sale of the apples is regulated by cooperatives, among them well-known names like “Melinda” or “la Trentina”.
The most cultivated varieties are Golden Delicious, Stark Delicious, Granny Smith, Royal Gala, Winesap, Morgenduft, Fuji and Braeburn, but also the more traditional Canada Renetta. Mostly the apples are organically and biodynamically grown. But also the integrated agriculture, which is operating environmentally friendly, is strongly represented.
Apples can be found also in the traditional cuisine of the Trentino: typical sweets as the famous apfelstrudel (apple strudel) or the so-called “Smorum”, made of eggs, sugar, flour and apples are delicious pastries.
