A little walking tour to the San Colombano Hermitage and the eponymous lake Lago di San Colombano in the low Vallarsa valley near Rovereto
Image gallery: Hike to the San Colombano Hermitage
On the road from Rovereto to Vallarsa, at the level of the junction to Trambileno, our path starts. It proceeds into the canyon of the Vallarsa valley (Leimtal in German) to the San Colombano Church. The former hermitage is built into a rock shelter and a well-known landmark of the region.
Following the signpost “Eremo di San Colombano” we walk down into the valley. The bridge across the Leno di Vallarsa river leads us to the other side where we climb 102 steps along the rock, up to the hermitage. It is said that already in the 8th century the first hermit lived here, the last one about 1,000 years later. The church dates back to the 10th century.
For our way back we take the same route until the junction. There we follow the path to the Lago di San Colombano lake. The feature of the artificial lake is its elongated form. About 5 km is the distance until the point, where the Leno River flows into the lake. Now in autumn, the coloured leaves are reflected in the water.
