Image gallery: Hike on the Dinosaurs’ Trail
As starting point for this walk, whe chose the ossuary of Castel Dante above Rovereto (spacious parking space). We follow the asphalted road „Strada degli Artiglieri“ towards south, soon we proceed slightly upwards, traversing vineyards and broad-leaf forests. Passing the S. Barbara chapel and the tombstones dedicated to fallen soldiers, in about 50 minutes we reach the beginning of the signposted dinosaur trail.
After some minutes only, on the right side of the path, there is a huge ledge with the first imprints of huge reptiles. We proceed on the path n°2, steeply upwards, to the observation posts with more imprints of dinosaurs. The panels provide information on the names of the dinosaurs and the respective imprints. The largest have a diametre of 30-40 cm and an average depth of 10 cm, which is indicative of the dimensions of the dinosaurs with an average hight of 5-6 m and a weight of 1-2 tons. These animals are supposed to have been the largest of their kind in Italy.
We proceed our tour across the rocks, the trail leads us back to our starting point, where we find our way back to Castel Dante.
Please note: it is possible to proceed by car to the actual starting point of the circular dinosaur trail, which shortens walking time of about 1 hour.
