The municipal area of Folgaria, which is inhabited by 3,200 citizens, is located at 1,170 m asl.
The Skiarea Alpe Cimbra, part of the Skirama Dolomiti, provides some 100 km of ski runs. A true paradise for skiing, snowboarding, skitouring, tobogganing, ice skating, snowshoeing and much more...
Summer turns Folgaria into a popular holiday resort, especially with families and children. A number of sports and relaxation opportunities are waiting for you, from lovely walks past colourful meadows, woods and lakes to numerous sports facilities. Worth seeing are also the Botanic Gardens of Passo Coe, featuring a rich flora and fauna and introducing you to the morphology and karstic phenomena of the area.
The Folgaria high plateau makes you indulge into its eventful history. Around 1150 AD Folgaria was declared "magnifica comunità" by the Bishop of Trento and thus became more autonomous. Afterwards the high plateau got in the circle of influence of Venice and returned to the Austrian dynasty. Also the front line of WWI traversed the municipal territory and for this reason Austria-Hungary had three fortresses built, which still exist today: Forte Cherle, Forte Dosso del Sommo di Serrada and Forte Sommo Alto.
Folgaria is one of the villages that have been honoured for their resistence in the Nazi period. Every year on August 15 inhabitants of this village commemorate the massacre of the Zonta alpine pasture at Passo Coe, in which 17 people were shot by the Nazis in 1944.
