Fondo in the Val di Non valley is a charming mountain village, situated at 1,000 m a.s.l. and inhabited by 1,500 citizens. Here the road to the Palade mountain pass (South Tyrol) crosses the road to the M endola mountain pass (South Tyrol) and the Tonale mountain pass (Lombardy).
Since a few years the Rio Sass canyon is accessible thanks to several established trails and stairs. Whirling water, fossiles, stalagmites and stalactites, this is what you can explore in this area. Astonishingly beautiful is also Lake Smeraldo, a lake that has been established in an artificial basin at the end of the valley, crossing the course of the Rio Fondo river. Equally impressive is the Santa Maria Lake and the pond of Tret, located next to the homonymous village.
Winter in Fondo, however, means above all embarking on oh-so enchanting snowshoeing walks. Here you will find one of the main snowshoeing events of the valley, the so-called “Ciaspolada”. Athletes compete on the snow with snowshoes, in local dialect called “ciaspole”. Beside numerous local participants, there are also athletes coming from all over the world.
