Located between the towns of Rovereto and Trento, Calliano extends at the foot of the mighty castle complex of Castel Beseno. In medieval times, the village of historical, even pre-historical origins, was equipped with a garrison, called “murazzi“, which still today can be admired at various castle complexes. Situated in a strategic position, Calliano was the setting of numerous fights, the most significant was probably the one of 1487 when troops of the Trentino fought against Venetian troops. This fight is still commemorated today in a historical event.
Worth visiting is the S. Lorenzo church, built in 1724 in neoclassical style and in remembrance of the above mentioned fights. Worth to be visited are also the Palazzo Moll and Palazzo dalla Torre.
Also for those who love gastronomy Calliano is an ideal place to stay, gourmets have the possibility to taste the best wines and delicacies of the Trentino. In the south of the village there is another mighty castle, called Castel Pietra.
